12 Degrees & Skiving

what began as year-long challenge has become perpetual until further notice

• Week 23 • Cavatina

The Necessity of Siesta

when the south sun bisects old brick from new,
the pull begins;
when garlic drafts ambush through shutter cracks,
lassitude wins
heavy joy from the roads of the belly,
lends the heart fins
of lengthened shadow and deepening tune
to swim through the Tiber of afternoon

The Italian form of of Cavatina consists of 3 non-rhyming 10-syllable lines alternating with 3 4-syllable rhyming lines. At the end there are 2 separate rhyming lines of ten syllables.
