12 Degrees & Skiving

what began as year-long challenge has become perpetual until further notice

Who is my muse? / Chi è la mia musa?

So here is where I thank my muse: my wonderful other half Marco. He helps me with modes of speech that are diverse in Italiano. English is his second language – and poetry is becoming his third.

That he has taken an active interest in my writing is elating; he is the first man in my life to do so without prompting, though, because it is poetry and I write in English, the language was leaving him behind. That’s why I took up this challenge: it teaches us both and helps us cross from either language bank and meet mid-river.
Marco, thank you for all your help and endless patience. In fact, per everything you do. Ti Amo!

Italiano is my second language. I’m mastering it – slowly – and I’ve felt ready for the NaPoWriMo challenge enough to translate what I write in English into Italiano.
It’s not easy, not because it is a second language, but because of the third language involved – that of poetry.
In effect, I often find have written two discrete poems. When a poem is translated out of its original language, some things are lost (such as onomatopoeia and rhyme) and sometimes there are prettier words in one language than in the other. Phrasal verbs exist in English but not in Italiano. Double/hyphenated adjectives (sloe-eyed; long-limbed, etc) work in English but not in Italiano. But there is a staccato, often accidental musicality in Italiano that one has to work at harder at in English.
And so on.
I hope you’re enjoying reading them as much as I love writing them.
