12 Degrees & Skiving

what began as year-long challenge has become perpetual until further notice

NaPoWriMo • 26 April • Lunch / Pranzo

lunch was that day
coins of zucchini in olive oil
fried till their skins glowed lapis
tropical orchid lobes of smoked salmon
pitted earth of brown bread
with butter oh butter

you excused the frugality
perhaps i yummed too much
but i was being truthful
if not inarticulate

three weeks after
your kitchen steamed, when we
shunned coffee drank tea
i still taste the
dreams still laced smokey
with sudden childhood
a collected egg
hen warm
a handful of sun stained
spinach leaves
was breakfast
mother, sister, cousin
meals taken with women
i relish
i realise
those few instances
that recalled simplicity
a meal in itself

those eaten
with such distance

~ ~ ~

quel giorno pranzo era
le monete di zucchine in olio d’oliva
fritti fino le loro pelli brillavano come lapis
c’erano i lobi orchidee tropicali di salmone affumicato
la terra butterata di pane integrale
con burro…oh, burro

ti sei scusata la frugalità
forse ho fatto troppi mmmm
ma venivo veritiere
se non inarticolato

tre settimane dopo
la tua cucina a vapore, quando abbiamo
schivato il caffe allo scopo di bere tè
ho ancora il gusto
sogni fumosi ancora cucita
con improvvisa infanzia
un uovo raccolto
caldo dalla gallina
una manciata
di foglie di spinaci
macchiato da sole
era la prima colazione
madre, sorella, cugina
pasti consumati con le donne
mi rendo conto
quei pochi casi
che la semplicità ricordato
una pietanza in sé

quelli mangiati
con tale distanza
